If you've been to the Summit YMCA this week you'll have noticed several new temporary walls and detours. Our construction team is inside making lots of progress already and it's exciting to envision what's to come!

WEEK 2 UPDATES
First, we'd like to thank all Summit Area YMCA members for your patience. Your cooperation and shared excitement have made this transition to construction very easy for our staff and the work crews on-site.
Next week, you will notice containment seals around our construction area as we begin the larger demolition phase. All efforts are being taken to eliminate dust and debris from common spaces and hallways that are still in use. We are operating multiple HEPA filters in and around the construction zone and our construction crews will begin using different access points to enter and exit the building off limit to our members.
Please note, noise from construction work may begin to pick up at times, and we appreciate your understanding.
Please continue to communicate with our staff if you have any questions or concerns. Finally, to the hundreds of Summit YMCA members and staff who have been visiting the Fitness Centers at the Springfield Community Pool or Berkeley Heights YMCA, it is great to see you continuing your fitness journeys at our other branches!

Starting May 3, the Summit YMCA will move forward with a $5 million renovation plan to transform and modernize its interior to meet today's standards, while maintaining its historic charm.

Starting May 3, the Summit YMCA will move forward with a $5 million renovation plan to transform and modernize its interior to meet today's standards, while maintaining its historic charm.
Since its first opening in 1886, the Summit YMCA has been evolving and expanding its youth development, social responsibility, and healthy living programming to better serve our community.
In 2018, with assistance from numerous Y supporters, the Summit Area YMCA began taking action on its vision of growth for the next century, by investing $16 million to address the changing needs of our diverse community through the construction of the new Berkeley Heights YMCA and community pool. This monumental facility provided the Y with more capacity to further expand its important programs and services for generations to come.
In 2022, this development continued, with a Capital Campaign to renovate the historic Summit YMCA—modernize its interior, improve facilities, enhance its ability to serve the community, and to make the Y more welcoming and accessible to all.
The Y on Maple Street was originally constructed in 1912 and last renovated in 1998. At the forefront of disease-prevention programs and as a support network for struggling families, aging adults and disconnected teenagers, the Summit YMCA is a community cornerstone, helping thousands of individuals find health and wellness in Summit and beyond, and welcoming over 17,000 people through its doors annually.
Thanks to the incredible generosity of Summit fans, Y supporters and their confidence in the Y’s impact, we are excited to announce phase one, a $5 million renewal of the Summit YMCA’s first and second floors, and renovation timeline from May to September of 2023.
Public support remains critical for the completion of this campaign and its outstanding cost. Naming, furniture, and equipment purchasing opportunities are available to help fuel the Y's ongoing mission of a strong and healthy community. Every size and type of donation counts!

CONSTRUCTION UPDATES ON THE BERKELEY HEIGHTS COMMUNITY POOL AT THE YMCA
Construction remobilized recently after our project was deemed essential by the Township of Berkeley Heights in late April. Barring any unforeseen circumstances the pool is scheduled to be completed (mid to late June) and we are projecting that the pool opening will happen sometime in July.
Current progress includes:
Remaining work on the pool is as follows:
In addition to the delay of the construction timeline, we are awaiting detailed guidance from the Governor’s office, the NJ Department of Health, and the Township on the conditions under which we will be allowed to operate the outdoor pool as it relates to social distancing, capacity (number of people allowed on the premises at any one time), pool deck disinfecting procedures, pool usage, outdoor summer camp and more. We continue to be hopeful that these directives will be available to us as soon as possible so that we can ramp up to hire and train all the personnel we will need to safely and securely run the outdoor pool this summer. A bright spot is that since the pool season is shorter on the front end, we plan on extending the season on the back end through the end of September -- this is possible because our outdoor pool is a heated pool.
We know that you understand our predicament and we ask that you continue to stay with us this summer. Thank you for your patience as we together try to navigate these very interesting times.

- Completion of Pool Equipment Building and Pool House exterior brick work and roofs
- Both Pool Equipment Building and Pool House have been energized and weatherized, light fixtures are being installed and interior construction continues
- Pool subcontractor finishing the grout for main pool stainless steel gutter system
- The kiddie wading pool construction to begin this week, as well as pool equipment installations in Pool Equipment Building
- Site grading/pool backfill is near completion
Remaining work on the pool is as follows:
- Retaining wall installation in progress with concrete flatwork/pool deck to follow completion
- Wading pool construction and finishes
- Pool equipment installations, configurations and start-ups
- Site grading, concrete pool deck, pool deck equipment installations
- Pool House and Equipment Building interior mechanical work and finishes
- Asphalt paving in parking lot
- Landscaping
- Fencing

BERKELEY HEIGHTS YMCA SETS GRAND OPENING OF NEW LOCATION FOR FEBRUARY 29
The much anticipated Grand Opening of the brand new Berkeley Heights YMCA is set for Saturday, February 29, 2020! This momentous day will be filled with fun activities, a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, light refreshments, facility tours, Membership and Program giveaways, half-court shot contest, Foot Dart, fitness demos, chair massages, Family Zumba and much more!
The Berkeley Heights YMCA, a branch of the Summit Area YMCA, opened its doors at 59 Locust Avenue to the public earlier this month on February 6 and is excited to welcome the community to its Grand Opening.
“Every day, we’ve woken up excited to be one step closer to being in a facility that could not only better serve our members, but the needs of our community.” said Tiffany Escott, Executive Director of the Berkeley Heights YMCA. “And that has always been and will always be our goal. Our community is continually growing and changing, and as a Y that is dedicated to serving the community and building a better future for all, we had to find a way to adapt and grow as well. We are so proud of the new Berkeley Heights YMCA, and we can’t wait to see everyone come through our doors and enjoy everything we’ve worked so hard to accomplish. It will be a sight to behold!”
This historic moment is captured, as the new facility is the first new YMCA branch built in NJ in over 10 years. Although it has been over a decade in the making, this journey began officially in 2017, when the Berkeley Heights Township Council unanimously approved an ordinance that allowed for a 50-year lease of the Locust Avenue property with the Summit Area YMCA. The approval allowed for the YMCA to not only continue to serve the community as it has for the past 22 years, but to expand its offerings and membership, including anticipated improvements to the Berkeley Heights Community Pool that was originally built in 1964 and had fallen into disrepair. Having successfully managed the Berkeley Heights Community Pool in 2016, the Summit Area YMCA was asked by officials to manage the pool moving forward, which became a wonderful opportunity to revitalize the its facilities while also ensuring the Y’s longevity in serving the community with a new building.
“We are confident the new Y facility and pool on Locust Ave will provide essential services that will strengthen the community even further. We are proud to offer youth and adults swim lessons and lifeguard certification trainings that reduce the risk of drowning, a full-sized gym where children will build confidence by learning skills and sportsmanship, a child care center that will give working parents quality care options and peace of mind, and multipurpose rooms where seniors, cancer survivors or others will gather for fellowship.” said Paul Kieltyka, President and CEO of the Summit Area YMCA.
The new 40,000 square foot facility provides premium modern amenities, more group fitness studios, program expansions with Youth and Adult sports, a spacious and convenient Kid Zone, quality child care and more. Berkeley Heights YMCA members do not only enjoy extended membership privileges to the Summit YMCA, but more than 2500 YMCAs in the USA with the added benefit of Nationwide Membership.

BERKELEY HEIGHTS YMCA SETS GRAND OPENING OF NEW LOCATION FOR FEBRUARY 29
The much anticipated Grand Opening of the brand new Berkeley Heights YMCA is set for Saturday, February 29, 2020! This momentous day will be filled with fun activities, a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, light refreshments, facility tours, Membership and Program giveaways, half-court shot contest, Foot Dart, fitness demos, chair massages, Family Zumba and much more!
The Berkeley Heights YMCA, a branch of the Summit Area YMCA, opened its doors at 59 Locust Avenue to the public earlier this month on February 6 and is excited to welcome the community to its Grand Opening.
“Every day, we’ve woken up excited to be one step closer to being in a facility that could not only better serve our members, but the needs of our community.” said Tiffany Escott, Executive Director of the Berkeley Heights YMCA. “And that has always been and will always be our goal. Our community is continually growing and changing, and as a Y that is dedicated to serving the community and building a better future for all, we had to find a way to adapt and grow as well. We are so proud of the new Berkeley Heights YMCA, and we can’t wait to see everyone come through our doors and enjoy everything we’ve worked so hard to accomplish. It will be a sight to behold!”
This historic moment is captured, as the new facility is the first new YMCA branch built in NJ in over 10 years. Although it has been over a decade in the making, this journey began officially in 2017, when the Berkeley Heights Township Council unanimously approved an ordinance that allowed for a 50-year lease of the Locust Avenue property with the Summit Area YMCA. The approval allowed for the YMCA to not only continue to serve the community as it has for the past 22 years, but to expand its offerings and membership, including anticipated improvements to the Berkeley Heights Community Pool that was originally built in 1964 and had fallen into disrepair. Having successfully managed the Berkeley Heights Community Pool in 2016, the Summit Area YMCA was asked by officials to manage the pool moving forward, which became a wonderful opportunity to revitalize the its facilities while also ensuring the Y’s longevity in serving the community with a new building.
“We are confident the new Y facility and pool on Locust Ave will provide essential services that will strengthen the community even further. We are proud to offer youth and adults swim lessons and lifeguard certification trainings that reduce the risk of drowning, a full-sized gym where children will build confidence by learning skills and sportsmanship, a child care center that will give working parents quality care options and peace of mind, and multipurpose rooms where seniors, cancer survivors or others will gather for fellowship.” said Paul Kieltyka, President and CEO of the Summit Area YMCA.
The new 40,000 square foot facility provides premium modern amenities, more group fitness studios, program expansions with Youth and Adult sports, a spacious and convenient Kid Zone, quality child care and more. Berkeley Heights YMCA members do not only enjoy extended membership privileges to the Summit YMCA, but more than 2500 YMCAs in the USA with the added benefit of Nationwide Membership.

On Monday, March 18, 2019, members of the Summit Area YMCA's Board and Executive Leadership Team gathered at the site of the new Berkeley Heights YMCA to sign their names on a steel beam to commemorate this historic construction and celebrate the future of the Summit Area YMCA. In attendance were Trustees Yon Cho, Tom Hall, Justine Segal and Rick Vicens along with Paul Kieltyka, President & CEO, Anjali McCormick, Chief Marketing & Operations Officer, Emily Mimms, VP of Development, and Janet Smith, VP of Human Resources. Later in the day, members of the Berkeley Heights YMCA's Leadership Team & staff joined Executive Director, Tiffany Escott, to commence their own beam signing ceremony. The long-term success of the Y facilities will ensure people are healthier, happier and stronger as we continue to adapt to the changing needs of our growing community.
The YMCA is grateful to Investors Foundation for their long-standing partnership with the YMCA and their continued investment in our community.

Thus, we regret to inform you the pool will not open for the summer of 2019. We hope this advance notice will give you the flexibility to make alternative plans for the upcoming 2019 summer. We look forward to welcoming you to our state-of-the art facility and pool in 2020.

BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ, October 6, 2018 – A grey morning did not dampen the turnout or enthusiasm of YMCA members, staff and trustees, township officials, key community partners and residents who gathered at the Berkeley Heights Community Pool on Locust Avenue to celebrate a highly anticipated event in the Summit Area YMCA’s history: the ground breaking for the new Berkeley Heights YMCA and Community Pool.
This new construction will create opportunities to collaborate with local organizations and partners, serve more children, families and seniors, create additional programs of all disciplines and highlight the Y as a community leader in youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

Saturday morning signified the end of this search and the beginning of a new era at the Summit Area YMCA. Summit Area YMCA President & CEO Paul Kieltyka addressed the crowd with his inspiring words. “It was never about the building, square footage, or the pools – it was about expanding our mission. Expanding our impact. It was about having the ability to really change lives. So what we’re celebrating this morning, in my eyes, is our ability to do this!”
Kieltyka was especially grateful to the Berkeley Heights community including its many residents, YMCA members and the township itself for its unwavering support of the Y mission.

He acknowledged Tiffany Escott and her staff, Trustee Yon Cho and the Facilities Committee of the Board, and the Summit Area YMCA Capital Campaign Committee, chaired by Robert Radest. In addition, Kieltyka acknowledged YMCA trustees, Senator Tom Kean, Jr., Berkeley Heights Township Officials, Berkeley Heights residents, YMCA staff members, and business partners: Vericon Construction, USA Architects, Jeffrey Sobel Consulting, Dynamic Engineering, Investors Bank, and GRO, for their help in bringing this project to fruition.
YMCA Trustee Teresa Mendez summed up the sentiment of the morning. “Once again we see the results of a new grassroots movement from the Y, board of Trustees, donors, staff, volunteers, community leaders, and the pillars of the community to create a place where everyone is welcome.”

Berkeley Heights Mayor Robert Woodruff and Robert Jeffries, Summit Area YMCA Chairman of the Board, then took to the podium to thank all those who made this day possible. Jeffries shared that the YMCA will be investing over $20 million in this project and the renovation of the Summit YMCA. He shared that to date, the Summit Area YMCA Capital Campaign has secured over $1.4 million in gifts and pledges to the two projects. He thanked supporters of the capital campaign and encouraged other community members to invest in the projects.

At the conclusion, various groups were called up to the podium to pose in hard hats and shovels, including young children, who will benefit from the new building and community pool. The crowd also enjoyed renderings of the new Y facility. A LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY: SEE YMCA HISTORY IN THE MAKING
Dear Members of our Community,
We are proud to announce and invite all members of the community to join us at the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new site of the Berkeley Heights YMCA on Saturday, October 6th at 8:30 AM at 59 Locust Avenue to celebrate this important event for Berkeley Heights.
For years, The Summit Area YMCA has been working to find a permanent location for the Berkeley Heights YMCA, so that we can continue to adapt to the changing needs of our diverse community. We have been limited in expanding our important programs to best serve the community, until now. We are grateful to have secured a 50-year lease agreement with the Township for the property at 59 Locust Avenue, home of the community pool. I, like many in our community, have made lasting memories with family and friends for many summers at the pool. The YMCA has successfully managed the operations of the pool for the last two summers.
As part of the lease agreement, the YMCA will be constructing a new YMCA facility, complete with a childcare center, full-size gymnasium, multi-purpose rooms, three studios, wellness center, and of course, a brand new outdoor pool. This new construction is being made possible by the many generous contributions of people in our community to the Berkeley Heights YMCA Capital Campaign. We are grateful to the many community members, businesses and foundations who have contributed over $740,000 in support of the new building and pool. We hope to have the opportunity to speak with more members in the community who would like to invest in the future of Berkeley Heights.
This new facility will create opportunities to collaborate with local organizations and partners, serve more children, families and seniors, create additional programs of all disciplines and cement the Y as the true community leader for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
The Summit Area YMCA has been serving the community since 1886 at our four branches: The Summit YMCA, The Learning Circle YMCA Childcare Center, The Berkeley Heights YMCA, and now proudly the Berkeley Heights Community Pool at the YMCA. Our Berkeley Heights Y opened 23 years ago in a leased building on Springfield Ave. As one the area’s leading nonprofits, we have been proud to serve the community and ensure everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive at the Y.
We provide working families with peace of mind, through quality and affordable childcare onsite and in 5 local elementary schools; we provide free membership to 7th Graders and free swim lessons for 2nd graders. We are proud to offer a variety of health and wellness classes for all ages and abilities, including LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA, a free cancer recovery program and Healthy Hearts, a free program to improve cardiovascular health.
The YMCA is committed to creating a culture in which diversity and inclusion are integral to everyday operations. We have partnered with local organizations, to introduce more Special Needs Programs for youth and teens. These programs are thoughtfully designed for children with diverse abilities including communication, social, behavioral and learning differences to thrive in a safe, friendly and supportive environment.
Last year the Summit Area YMCA provided over $500,000 in direct financial assistance to over 800 individuals at our branches for childcare, membership and subsidized programs. Subsidized programs and financial assistance are made possible through generous charitable contributions to the Y.
We are incredibly excited to share this historical moment for our Y with the community, and endeavor to continue providing quality programs, resources and services so that every individual has the ability to reach their full potential. We’re getting our hard hats and shovels ready for a new, thrilling beginning. I hope we have the opportunity to celebrate this investment in our community together.
